LymphaPod®: Lower-Body Compression Designed for Larger Patients

Image

Lymphedema care should be adapted to the patient’s body—not limited by the dimensions of a conventional garment.
For larger patients, finding an appropriate pneumatic compression garment can be challenging. Swelling may involve both legs and extend into the inner thighs, hips, buttocks, lower trunk, genital region or abdomen. Irregular contours and tissue lobules can also make standard leg garments difficult to position correctly.
LymphaPod® was developed to address these specific fitting and coverage needs.

Designed as a lower-body home-care garment for larger patients, LymphaPod® surrounds both legs and extends compression across the lower body. Its broad, adjustable construction can conform to irregular limbs and body shapes while providing an alternative for patients who may not be adequately accommodated by conventional leg garments.

What is LymphaPod®?

LymphaPod® is a specialized pneumatic compression garment designed for use with the Lympha Press® Optimal Plus system.
The garment is designed to treat the lower body, including:

  • Both legs

  • Inner and upper thighs

  • Hips

  • Buttocks

  • Lower trunk

  • Genital region

  • Abdomen

Its open construction allows the patient to be positioned inside the garment before it is secured around the lower body. This may be particularly relevant for larger patients and for people whose mobility makes it difficult to enter narrow, closely fitted leg sleeves.
Some patients may still require assistance when positioning or fastening the garment.

Why larger patients may require a different garment

A conventional pneumatic compression leg garment is designed to surround an individual limb. However, lower-body lymphedema may affect a much broader anatomical area.
In larger patients, treatment needs may include:

  • Substantial differences in circumference between the legs

  • Irregular lower-body contours

  • Large inner-thigh lobules

  • Swelling extending above the thighs

  • Bilateral lower-body involvement

  • Difficulty entering standard leg garments

  • Limited mobility

LymphaPod® is designed to conform to irregular limbs and body shapes. Its wider construction allows compression to extend beyond the legs to areas such as the hips and abdomen.
The garment places special emphasis on the inner-thigh area, where lobules may be difficult to accommodate within a conventional compression sleeve.

40 overlapping air chambers

LymphaPod® contains 40 overlapping air chambers.
During treatment, the chambers fill with air according to the program delivered by the Optimal Plus system. The overlapping chamber design is intended to provide continuous compression coverage between adjacent areas of the garment.
This construction allows the garment to surround a large treatment area while adapting to the patient’s body contours during inflation.
To understand the principles behind this type of treatment, read more about pneumatic compression therapy.

Bilateral lower-body coverage

LymphaPod® treats both sides of the lower body within one garment.
This design may be relevant when swelling affects:

  • Both legs

  • Both thighs

  • The hips and buttocks

  • The abdomen or lower trunk

  • Areas that extend across the centre of the lower body

Instead of positioning two separate leg garments, the patient is placed within one full lower-body garment.
The appropriate treatment area, pressure and program must always be determined according to the patient’s clinical assessment and prescribed treatment plan.

Designed with limited mobility in mind

Lymphedema does not always create a uniform change in limb size.
One leg may differ considerably from the other. Swelling may be concentrated in the thighs, hips or abdomen, while lobules and tissue folds may create additional fitting challenges.
LymphaPod® is designed to conform to irregular limbs and body shapes as the chambers inflate.
The garment is also available with the hose attachments exiting from either the right or left side. This allows the setup to be selected according to the patient’s access needs and the position of the Optimal Plus device.
Separate right and left expanders are available when additional circumference is required.

Designed for irregular body contours

Although LymphaPod® is designed as a broadly adjustable garment, correct measurement remains an important part of garment selection and fitting.
The Lympha Press® catalog includes a dedicated measuring form for LymphaPod® and lower-body garments. Measurements may include:

  • Instep

  • Ankle

  • Calf

  • Knee

  • Lower and upper thigh

  • Hips

  • Waist

  • Leg length

The position of lobules, protrusions and other unusual anatomical landmarks should also be recorded.
The catalog recommends measuring the patient while they are in the intended treatment position. It also notes that pneumatic garments can shorten slightly during inflation.
A garment should not fit tightly at any measurement point. When a patient’s circumference is close to the garment’s maximum measurement, an expander may be required.

Which device is compatible with LymphaPod®?

According to the Lympha Press® product catalog, LymphaPod® is designed for use only with the Lympha Press® Optimal Plus pneumatic compression system.
It should not be described as compatible with Mini Press, PCD-51 or every Lympha Press device.
The Optimal Plus controls the pressure and treatment cycle delivered through the garment. Treatment settings should be selected according to the approved instructions and the patient’s prescribed treatment plan.

Is LymphaPod® suitable for every larger patient?

No single garment is appropriate for every patient.
LymphaPod® was designed specifically for larger patients, but body size alone does not determine whether the garment is suitable.
A healthcare professional should consider:

  • The patient’s diagnosis

  • The location and extent of swelling

  • Limb and body measurements

  • Tissue condition

  • Skin integrity

  • Mobility

  • Medical history

  • Treatment goals

  • Relevant contraindications

Pneumatic compression should only be used when clinically appropriate and according to the approved instructions for the connected device.

Can LymphaPod® be used at home?

Yes. The catalog describes LymphaPod® as a home-care system.
Home use should follow professional assessment, garment fitting and instruction. The patient or caregiver should understand how to position the garment, connect it to the Optimal Plus system and follow the prescribed treatment program.
Changes in swelling, pain, skin condition or general health should be reported to the treating healthcare professional.

Compression therapy adapted to the patient

Larger patients with lower-body lymphedema may require more than a wider leg sleeve.
They may need a garment that accounts for bilateral swelling, irregular contours, inner-thigh lobules, limited mobility and involvement of the hips or abdomen.
LymphaPod® was developed around these needs.
With 40 overlapping chambers, full lower-body coverage, an adjustable construction and available expanders, it provides a specialized pneumatic compression option for larger patients whose treatment needs may not be met by conventional leg garments.
